Umbria

(Typical Umbrian Landscape.)Precisely at the centre of the Italian peninsular, without any coastline, lies the region of Umbria, crossed by the Appennine mountains which, snow-capped in winter, soften into gentle hills, green fertile valleys and wide plains. From its upper reaches in the north of the region the river Tiber flows majestically south towards Rome, clinging to its beloved Umbria until the very last moment - a place appropriately marked by the remains of the Roman settlement, Otriculum.

Land-locked though it is, Umbria is served by an excellent communications network which provides good access throughout the year. The international airports of Rome, Pisa, Bologna and Florence are all within one to two and a half hours driving distance. Perugia airport now has three flights a week from London Stansted with Ryanair. Those who don't drive can take advantage of the excellent rail network which is amazingly punctual and cheap.

(Spoleto.) Umbria quite naturally separates into three distinct areas, each one very different. The Upper Tiber Valley, in the north, with vast wild areas and many isolated properties scattered around the hillsides. In the centre is the area which has become known as the Umbria/Tuscany border, lying to the west of, and including, the third largest lake in Italy, Lago Trasimeno. The countryside trapped between the shores of the lake and Tuscan border is extremely pretty and there are the additional smaller lakes of Chiusi and Montepulciano to make up for the lack of coastline. This has become one of the most sought-after areas in recent years and houses here, especially those with lake views, are at a premium. The south of the region, especially around Todi, has become much sought-after amongst well-to-do artists, actors and Romans (Rome is an hour away).

Umbria has one of the best climates in Italy, with an early spring and late autumn, and a winter that is characterised by cold, crisp mornings with a bright blue sky and glowing sun. It is quite possible on a good December day to be able to sit outside and enjoy an aperitivo.
